UTAU Tutorial (Making your own UTAU included)

Post by WielderOfThorn on 16th September 2011, 1:19 am

UTAU TUTORIAL
GETTING STARTED
1. Make sure you have Japanese font installed on your computer. If you don't, you'll go through hell. You can't just install the font after realizing UTAU is in Japanese, because the program format of that download is corrupt. Also, you will need a basic understanding of Japanese (Atleast Identifying Hiragana/Katakana)
2. Go go to google. Search "UTAU download". It doesn't matter what language you type in, it should be the first result. Click on the website.
3. So now you realise it's in Japanese. Nice observational skills you have there. Scroll down until you see "Version 2.76" (or a more current version). Click on it, a download should pop up.
4. Click save. You won't need to run it.
5. You will now need Audacity. This is in English, so it will be easier for you. Google "Audacity download" and download it. You won't need to run this yet either. NOTICE: Audacity isn't always in English. Mine changed to another language somehow lmfao. It's not that scary considering I'm messing with that language, though.
6. Okay, you should now have Audacity and a version of UTAU. Firstly, go to your documents. If you don't know how to do that, go to start and select "my documents" when you find it.
7. Look for UTAU<version number here>. It should be a winRAR archive, if you don't have winRAR there won't be anything you can do with it. Go on google and search "winRAR download" and find an official download and go through installation steps.
8. When you have winRAR, double click on "Utau" (It may have a different file name, however, the keyword will ALWAYS be UTAU.)
9. It should pop up as a winRAR archive. I believe the first folder is "res" which you should click on. Then click on "UTAU<version number here>" folder, and you should have "wavtool.exe" and "resampler.exe" Another exe file will be UTAU itself and mkdefo.exe If you don't have wavtool.exe and resampler.exe nothing will work for you! It should be included in the download of UTAU.
10. Open up UTAU. You won't need "UTAU inst" unless it says its missing a component. A keyboard looking program should come up. UTAU is successfully installed.
11. Go to (M) then (R) You are given Uta Utane (Defoko). Make sure she is selected. In the bottom, if wavtool.exe and resampler.exe are red, then press "..." next to them, and find them in the UTAU folder. Select them and they should no longer be red. Press "OK" and if question marks come up you did something wrong, and I can't help you.
12. Search your UTAU folder for "voice" then "uta" Click on "Uta" (Uta Utane/Defoko). This is Defoko's voicebank. It will appear in Japanese or corrupted format. If it's in Japanese, you will have to read the letters and change them to their romanized equivalent. If it's in corrupted format, you will have to play each file and manually determine what Defoko is trying to say/sing. I would just give up, considering she is hard to understand.
PART 2
Making your own
(Specifically for people with formatting problems, or people who don't want to use default UTAU)
1. Go to voice - uta. Open up character.txt, copy the contents, get another document opened up (IT MUST BE NOTEPAD) Copy & paste, change the name to yours or whatever you want to call your UTAU. You can also add an image, but I don't know how to do that (It must be 100x100 pixel) So you'll have to find out on your own.
2. Make a new folder under voice with your name/utau name and save it as character.txt in your new folder. 3.Open up audacity now, Make sure no one is in the background. Open up http://www.en.wikipedia.org/wiki/hiragana and press record. Sing each letter individually (correctly). Take "a" for example. Remove the silence (scroll over the silence in the beginning and end and delete it, SEPARATELY of course. Use the scissors button to cut it out). Press "File" and "export as wav" then export it to your character folder. Do this until you have all the letters done. (Again, make sure you pronounced them clearly and correctly!)
4. Now, open up UTAU, go to (M) then (R)  and under the name (with the info button next to it) Press "..." and go to your character folder. Select either "a, i , e , o , u, n" because it won't matter. Make sure you have wavtool.exe and resampler.exe in white. Now just press OK.
Now you have your own character.

PART 3 Final
The final part.
You can make your own songs (highly suggested you use them within your vocal range) or you can download .ust files. So far the only romanized ust I know of are Aku no Musume, Paradichlorobenzene and Love is War.
Search the usts on Google to get them.
MAKE SURE YOU DON'T DOWNLOAD .VSQ FILES!!! THOSE ONLY WORK FOR THE VOCALOID SOFTWARE!
Open up the ust files with winRAR, and select it. It will open up with UTAU, go to (M) then (R). Then go to the name (with "info" to the right) and go to your character folder. (Again, select a, i, e, o, u, n) and make sure wavtool.exe and resampler.exe are white and finally press OK.
Select each letter of the song and individually play them so they can extract and recognize what to do without a long wait. And last but not least, highlight the WHOLE song and press "play" (Blue triangle)
((It will still be a wait))

((Also, I don't know if resampler will be in white or not, I just know that if it's in red, you need to select it.))

I hope I helped!

-wince- This was posted in 2011. A lot of it is still correct, but there are some things needing to be changed and some information to be added. I'll get to it eventually, but for now this shouldn't be anyone's main resource/tutorial. Neutral
I still remember making it in science class
